June 2021
As the sun was coming up on June 3rd, city officials moved to open George Floyd Square to vehicular traffic. Hours later officers with the Hennepin County and Ramsey County Sheriff's office, part of a U.S. Marshals Service task force, shot and killed 32-year-old Winston Smith on top of a parking ramp in Uptown Minneapolis.
The shooting death prompted weeks of protests which also left protester Deona Knajdek dead after a man drove his vehicle through barricades on June 13th.
